Fixture Market Boom: Fueled by New Energy and Aerospace Demand

2025-09-29

In recent years, with the explosive growth of the new energy vehicle industry and sustained high investments in the aerospace sector, the surging demand from downstream markets has triggered a "boom" in the upstream gauge and fixture industries. Customization, rapid response, and lightweight solutions have become the key factors enabling suppliers to secure orders.

New Energy Vehicles: Presenting New Challenges in Structure and Materials
The unique structures of new-energy vehicles—such as battery packs and motor mounts—and the extensive use of advanced materials like aluminum alloys and carbon fiber pose entirely new challenges to traditional mold and fixture designs. For instance, large, deep-cavity components like battery housings demand molds with superior cooling efficiency and enhanced venting capabilities. Meanwhile, given the softness and tendency for deformation inherent in aluminum alloy materials, welding fixtures must incorporate more versatile positioning mechanisms and meticulously engineered anti-deformation features. As a result, precision requirements have generally increased—from the previous ±0.1mm tolerance down to within ±0.05mm or even tighter.

“The project cycle is being compressed more and more,” revealed a project manager from an inspection tool company specializing in the new energy sector. “Automotive OEMs are now demanding that we complete the design and deliver the inspection tools within just four weeks—forcing us to adopt modular, standardized design principles, as well as rapid manufacturing technologies like 3D printing, to meet these tight deadlines.”

Aerospace: Ultimate Precision and Stringent Standards
The aerospace industry's requirements for fixtures and inspection tools represent the highest standards in the sector. Aircraft structural components typically feature large dimensions, complex surface geometries, and materials that are difficult to machine. As a result, the assembly jigs and inspection fixtures not only demand exceptional precision and stability but also must withstand prolonged use with enduring mechanical integrity. Additionally, the widespread adoption of composite material components necessitates specialized inspection tools and methods to ensure flawless internal quality—free from defects such as porosity or delamination.

Talent and innovation emerge as both industry bottlenecks and opportunities.
The booming market has also highlighted the shortage of high-end talent in the industry. Meanwhile, versatile engineers who excel in traditional mechanical design, materials science, measurement techniques, and CAD/CAE software have become scarce resources fiercely sought after by companies.

Meanwhile, numerous innovations have also emerged—such as the use of carbon-fiber composite materials to create gauge frames and fixture arms, which not only maintain rigidity but also significantly reduce weight, making them easier for workers to handle. Additionally, an AR (augmented reality)-based smart gauge system has been introduced, using virtual projections to guide assembly workers in performing tasks precisely at the right locations, thereby dramatically lowering the error rate.
